Longtime Charleston resident Jenny Ferrara opened Philosophers & Fools in March 2024 with her husband, Michael Bourke, to provide a different kind of third space for their community. As co-owner and lead “booktender,” Jenny shares her favorite local spots and tips for visiting the stunning South Carolina city.
Q: What led you to opening Philosophers & Fools?
A: My husband and I have always been avid readers and we wanted to create a space for our community where you can sit with a book and enjoy a glass of sustainably grown wine or a craft beer and just relax. Or have a chill place to meet up with friends that isn’t a typical bar.
Q: What do you love most about running a bookshop in Charleston?
A: Everything! Opening Philosophers & Fools was a dream that in reality has exceeded my expectations. We love to talk books and wine with people.

Q: What’s something travelers often misunderstand or overlook about Charleston?
A: When it rains, the streets can flood. Bring a rain jacket and a good umbrella and be prepared to navigate the city in the rain.
Q: Are there any bookish events (readings, festivals, etc.) travelers should know about?
A: The Charleston Literary Festival takes place every November and brings in an impressive roster of authors every year.
Q: If a book lover had just one day in Charleston, what should they do?
A: A bookshop hop! We have so many wonderful local, independent bookstores both on the peninsula and in neighboring cities. You can make a whole day of it!
